La tradition veut que le site de Saint-Martin-des-Champs ait été connu depuis les temps immémoriaux par les Voyageurs, bien avant le Grand Schisme.
Les fouilles les plus récentes le confirment : une basilique funéraire mérovingienne s'élevait déjà sur le site au VI et VIIè siècles. Elle fut réaménagée sous les Carolingiens.
Objet d'une intense rivalité lors des invasions normandes, ce n'est pas un hasard si elle fut rasée et laissée pour détruite.
L'enjeu était bien sûr l'accès au Vortex. Ou plutôt son obstruction et son oubli.
